Social-profit (501c3) Overview
Illampu promotes three themes: conservation, enhanced quality of living and education. We aim to conserve biodiversity within the rainforest of Viracochasi, Perú, and support the community by building an ethical economy based on educational ecotourism and sustainable agriculture. Illampu means hope because it aims to improve the lives of the families in Viracochasi by reducing poverty; introducing public health services and academic interests; enhancing agricultural production; enabling locals to build better homes; and sponsoring trips to Machu Pichu. By addressing these objectives, Illampu will not only enhance the quality of living for community members, but it will also enable rainforest conservation and reforestation. The reforestation initiative will be led by study-abroad students from American Universities. To accommodate international visitors who will stimulate the local economy, Illampu will have a facility and lodge that enables professors to guide their students through hands-on experiences that accompany their domestic coursework. To promote American inner-city education reform, scholarships for high school students will be awarded so that they can participate in the University-led study abroad groups, and learn about globalization, careers in sustainable development, and professional applications.
